Ubuntu 8.04 GUI Design Idea by Mossblaser Ubuntu 8.04 GUI Design Idea by Mossblaser
My design idea for the new version of Ubuntu. I tried to go for a black/orange theme however it feels a little more brown than orange but oh well. If this is fairly well received then I might send it off to the Ubuntu guys to have a look at. I have seen some nice widget designs and icon designs around anyway so I haven't made anything new or innovative there... (Most icons are "Human" ones anyway). The wallpaper was just a quick'n'dirty curve things just as a place holder - again I have seen many good wallpapers in the suggestion boxes already.

Comments/criticisms/suggestions please folks!

This is about as good or slightly better than the precise pangolin one. Any plans to realize and release the gtk3 portion of the theme?

Have you seen the new notification standard Shuttleworth has announced. It's almost identical to your mockup.

I sooo want my desktop to look like this! Does anyone know how to make actual installable themes for Ubuntu. The transparencies I'm sure would be hard to work with but I'd like to build a theme you can download and install based on this.
ViperBorg Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2008
All right, man. Where's the download for this? I'd love to get my linux box looking like this.
shadowwarior Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2008
Nice, simple and clean, very good :)

I like it specially that notification box.
I'd test it on my Asus Eee with changes (smaller icons, smaller fonts).

GREAT color choice, I really hope Ubuntu moves away from the brown and more towards reds and oranges like this

I would actually like a little slider to scale the system-wide font up or down. i dont care what font is used, as long as it seems crisp and fresh on my LCD and soon to be OLED.
Mossblaser Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2008   Interface Designer
There is as such, turn the DPI up and down (in the fonts config menu) - this is a good way of making the system more usable on high density displays, from long distances (i.e. for presentations/demos) or for accessibility (as the effect is nearly 100% consistent)
Royce-Barber Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2008  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
Thank you, but I need a way to change the size of the fonts imediatly at any time. A slider that would be in the top tool bar. Or some very easy way to zoom in an out of a website, so I can get an idea of what the whole site is about before mucking about reading the various pages. I need to be able to access lots of information much faster than I can now. I have highspeed internet and computers, multiple displays, and lots of graphical goodies, but it's all too "windows 95" looking, even with the most advanced shiny themes. The basic interface is the same as always, and I can't handle that. It actually gets to me... The repitition and clumbsey way that humans interact with their computers. It's really annnoying actually.

Digging through menus makes me sad. :P

That's really nice ; I think it's the only mockup I saw that could be used as default theme for Ubuntu. Why don't you try submitting it here : [link]

Great job! I would love my ubuntu too look like this hopefully 8 will be like this! if not, are you planning on coding it into a skin for ubuntu?
d1s4st3r Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2008
Wow! I really like it, but in my humble opinion I think it's a little bit dark... And I think the menu should remain with its original Gnome tint (light grey).
Is that theme available somewhere?
Nice work, thus. :D
UlisseUbuntu Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2008
cool, relaxing, original..and dark :)
Very nice!
sweatyfish Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2008
It's okay, but looks too much like Sabayon
BNABros Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2008   Photographer
The minimize, maximize, and close icons look like they need some work. To me, those are the most important part of a theme.

The gnome separator looks all wrong.

If you get a new version up, put up an xcf/psd as well so we can make some themes!

Its all done in inkscape so if I do it'll be an SVG.

It seems a little too blurry, especially in the window buttons (X [] _ ) and on the bottom toolbar.
kwiwii Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
too bright, its not really the darker ubuntu orange but still cool idea

Not bad, not bad at all. I think it would make a great alternative.
calande Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
It's nice but a little too red and aggressive. I prefer dark orange and brown :)
FTIII Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
this is awesome. I Dugg it up; this should definitely be recommended to the Ubuntu dev community.
nivek-kh Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008   Interface Designer
a little too intense for my liking.. but still, good work.

pixelpig Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008  Hobbyist Photographer
Man this is brilliant. I think it really is a step up from what we are used to on Ubuntu. Nice job!! Send it over to the team asap!!
niomi Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
I love the design! I like the brown more than orange look for ubuntu, honestly. If it comes in other colors I might actually use it for my theme (I like dark dark themes, easier on my eyes and I like it aesthetically too)

Something I would suggest, which is my personal preference is for it to take up less whitespace or for there to be a more compact version. Things like smaller buttons in the window's title bar. I like that the buttons don't look huge like most gnome themes do.
stampgevaar Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
Looks great :D send it to the ubuntu guys if this was default there was no need for change
expert01 Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
Awesome! Where's the download?
starb Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
It's darker than the current Ubuntu design but I like it. But I think the official one is prettier (I still love brown). Maybe it could be bundled with Ubuntu, to have more choice for the GUI?
Variety is good and I think that it keeps the identity of the product.
oneeye01 Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008  Hobbyist Photographer
i have to say i like it, especially the menu and the notification box... anyway i'd change the icons too.
Love it hasn't that shitty shade of brown of previous ubunuts.
Hope they'll keep an eye on this!
XxDesmusxX Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2008
I really hope it looks nothing like that, but that's just my opinion.
